Destiny is a very enjoyable comedic short film by Vikkramm Chandirramani about a young woman called Tanya, who, upon being dumped by Derek, a guy she met on a dating site, sets about torturing him by setting up a variety of fake dating profiles and arranging to meet him all around Bombay. She enlists the help of her best friend who tries to encourage her to give the guy a break, but Tanya is obsessed.
The lead performances from Nikita Vijayvargia as Tanya and Monika Panwar as her best friend Richa are amiable and high-spirited. The vivacity of Vijayvargia’s performance means we never feel as though she is being overly unkind, and the resulting pandemonium for the long-suffering Derek is amusing rather than feeling mean-spirited. There is also an unexpected and satisfying pay-off at the end of the film, in which Tanya finally gets her comeuppance.
The film has lovely cinematography with a bright, slightly saturated colour palette that reflects and enhances the light-hearted tone. This is a charming romp of a short film and it is unsurprisingly that it has had success on the international film festival circuit.
